Watching Franziska Fallenstein of Studio FF in Dresden prepare her Mamiya reminded me that photography was never meant to be fast.
The camera slows everything down.
The film is unpacked carefully, loaded and advanced. Each movement requires expertise and just the right balance of applying pressure and gentle handling of delicate equipment that has stood the test of time.
There are ten frames in a medium format film.
Ten opportunities to pay attention.
And suddenly every image matters again.
Digital photography has given us abundance.
Medium format asks for devotion.
You cannot spray and pray.
You cannot hide behind hundreds of exposures.
You must look.
Really look.
Franziska told me she spends a long time observing before she ever presses the shutter.
Watching.
Waiting.
Seeing what reveals itself.
Not forcing.
Not extracting.
Discovering.
When you follow this approach, the photograph is not taken, it is found.
That is what fascinates me.
The ritual before the image.
The moment before the work exists.
The stillness before the decision, where attention is the instrument, not the camera.
The moment before the image becomes memory and before the memory becomes legacy.
